Former Hong Kong international school teacher awaiting child sex trial found hanged in cell
Former staff member at HK school found hanged in isolation cell at Philippine prison
Hilton Munro, 47, was found hanged in his isolation cell in a detention facility on Cebu Island last week.
The Australian, a former teacher at the Victoria Shanghai Academy in Aberdeen, had been behind bars for almost two years pending his trial for allegedly sexually abusing four boys, aged nine to 12, while on holiday.
"Help me pass quietly," Munro wrote in a note to another inmate hours before his death.
The teacher, who had been in isolation since an incident with other prisoners in December, was depressed, Cebu police said.
In September, Munro told the that he believed he could beat the charges, although he added: "I am taking responsibility for what I did." He declined to say what exactly he was taking responsibility for.
Between 2005 and 2008, Munro taught sport in the primary section of the Victoria Shanghai Academy. However, he was banned from returning to the campus in 2010 after allegations he had an inappropriate online discussion with a 13-year-old pupil, former colleagues said.
