The group was diving about 20 metres off Tai Lak Lei Island, near Trio Island, on Monday morning when the 49-year-old man was found unconscious in the water, police said.

The force was alerted at 10.37am and told attempts to revive the man had been unsuccessful.

When officers arrived on the scene, the man was unconscious. He was taken by marine police to a base where he was airlifted to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan.

A preliminary investigation found that the man “accidentally drowned during diving at the site”, police said.

A spokesman from the force said the man was part of a diving group and was in the sea when he collapsed. According to police, he was certified dead at 12.10pm.
