Hong Kong braces for cold spell, with temperatures forecast to drop this week

  • Cold front forecast to move across Guangdong coast, with mercury expected to fall to 17 degrees Celsius
  • Observatory tells people to expect larger difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures

Hongkongers will have the opportunity to use their winter wardrobes this week, with a cold front forecast to cross the Guangdong coast bringing a drop in temperatures.

While temperatures soared to 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) on Sunday, the mercury is expected to fall to 17 degrees on Monday morning.

The Observatory said the city would experience a larger difference in temperatures between daytime and nighttime for the coming week.

“It will become appreciably cooler [on Monday] morning,” the Observatory said in a special weather tip. “Members of the public should be aware of the change in weather [on Sunday night and Monday] morning.”

The wind was also expected to pick up overnight, with a few showers predicted.

A northeast monsoon will also bring drier and cooler weather over the next few days, with minimum temperatures forecast to hover around 16 to 17 degrees, and a maximum of 24 degrees.

Hong Kong has continued to see warmer Novembers than usual over the past three years, with last year’s at a record high. The monthly mean maximum temperature last November was 26.4 degrees, 2.3 degrees above the normal figure.

There were also warmer than usual temperatures at the beginning of October, but relatively cooler weather at the end of the month. The monthly mean temperature of 26 degrees was still 0.5 degrees higher than normal.

It was also much wetter than usual last month, with the city battered by typhoons Lionrock and Kompasu in quick succession. The former caused the collapse of scaffolding outside a residential building in Happy Valley, killing one person and injuring another.

The lowest temperature came on October 22, when the city was affected by a cold front, with the mercury falling to 18.2 degrees that morning.
