While most Hongkongers insist nothing will stand in the way of their lavish Mother’s Day plans, retailers and restaurant operators are preparing for the worst.

Simon Wong Ka-wo, president of the Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants and Related Trades, expected locals would spend 10 per cent less on meals to treat their mothers.

“Hongkongers have been spending less money in the restaurants,” said Wong. He said some restaurants had to slash prices or come up with new menus offering cheaper dishes for this year’s Mother’s Day to lure Hongkongers who had become more frugal in the economic downturn.

“As a tradition, they will still treat their mothers with some decent meals,” Wong said, but this year’s treat would not be as extravagant as it used to be.

However, Hongkongers polled by the Post vowed not to tighten their belts on gifts or meals.
