500 evacuated as massive blaze engulfs Hong Kong residential building

Bamboo scaffolding around Tseung Kwan O building goes up in flames, taking firefighters nearly four hours to extinguish

Hundreds of people were evacuated when the bamboo scaffolding around their Tseung Kwan O residential building went up in flames in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Six people were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The fire broke out on around the 23rd-floor of Fai King House, King Ming Court, at 4.32am. It was raised to a No 3 alarm 45 minutes later.

Firefighters arrived within minutes and managed to put out most of the blaze by 7am with the deployment of five jets and 10 breathing apparatus teams. About 500 residents were evacuated from the complex.

Television images showed large swathes of the mesh and bamboo scaffolding alight in a blaze on three sides of the building.
