The Indonesian domestic helper who was killed by a falling 60kg concrete slab in North Point was the sole breadwinner of the family, her uncle said in hospital, minutes before he was informed of her death.

Elis Kurniasih was well-loved by family and friends; her mother wept on the phone when she learned - shortly before Elis died - that she might not be able to see her daughter again, the uncle, Sudrajat, recalled.

"The parents really wanted to come over," he said at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan on Monday. "But because there are only four people in the house - Elis' mother and father and Elis' two children - if her mother left, who would look after the rest of them?"

Sudrajat had landed in Hong Kong on Friday to check on his niece on behalf of the family, after news reached them that Elis had been struck.

Elis had recently finished a job contract and Sunlight Employment Agency, a partner of Sunlight Holding Management, had arranged a new employer for her.

She was sleeping on the second-floor balcony of Sunlight Holdings Management in Chu Kee Building last Wednesday when the hefty piece of masonry broke away from around an air conditioner on the fifth floor and crushed her.
