Donor steps in to save the sight of Tunisian tourist attacked on night out in Wan Chai
Retired Hongkonger pays for crucial surgery on the remaining eye of Tunisian visitor who was assaulted with a beer bottle in Wan Chai
A generous donor has stepped forward to help pay for surgery that may save the sight of a Tunisian tourist attacked on the streets of Hong Kong.
The retired Hongkonger, who read about Gharbi Mohamed's plight in the last month, handed over HK$59,000 to cover the visitor's outstanding medical bills.
Mohamed lost the sight in his right eye when he was hit in the face with a beer bottle in Wan Chai early on October 16. After emergency treatment, he was advised to undergo a further operation to prevent the sight in his left eye from deteriorating.
The second operation pushes the hospital bill into six figures, but the donation means Mohamed can now go ahead with the surgery.
After meeting Mohamed on Friday, the donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: "Let's not waste any time. Let's save his remaining eye."
The male donor, in his 70s, said he wanted to help to show that the attack was not characteristic of Hong Kong.
Mohamed, who turned 29 recently, met the donor on Friday at Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan, where he was treated.
