Hong Kong directors Ann Hui On-wah and Peter Chan Ho-sun will return to this year's Venice Film Festival with their latest screen offerings and stellar mainland casts.
Chan's latest film Dearest, which stars mainland actress Vicki Zhao Wei and actor Huang Bo, will be showing in the out-of-competition section, it was announced yesterday.
It will also be showing at the Toronto International Film Festival in November under the special presentations section.
Chan's Perhaps Love was selected as the closing film of the Venice festival - the world's oldest event of its kind - in 2005.
He will join Hui's return to the festival, which will close with the acclaimed director's The Golden Era, a drama starring mainland actress Tang Wei and actor Feng Shaofeng.
The film is a biopic of Xiao Hong, one of the most prominent female writers in the 1930s.
Hui competed in Venice in 2011 with A Simple Life, and the film's leading actress Deanie Ip won the best actress award with her role as an amah, or domestic helper, who serves a family her whole life.
Hui will also chair the jury for the festival's Orizzonti competition section, which focuses on debut and independent films.
The main competition, like the Cannes Film Festival in May, is largely dominated by Western features.
Although China is now the world's largest film market outside of North America, Chinese films continue to lose favour at international film festivals that focus on artistic merits rather than commercial success.
Mainland art house director Wang Xiaoshuai's Red Amnesia is the only Chinese-language feature competing for the prestigious Golden Lion award this year.
The other Asian feature competing for the Golden Lion is Shinya Tsukamoto's Fires on the Plain.
The short film Great Heat by Chen Tao is another Chinese-language film showing at the festival, but in the Orizzonti section.
Hill of Freedom, a 66-minute feature by South Korean Hong Sang-soo, also competes in this section.
The 71st Venice International Film Festival will run from August 27 to September 6 on the island of Lido in Venice.
