SCMP artist Adolfo Arranz bags gold prizes at news design Pulitzer

Arranz, 44, won gold for his portfolio and for his infographic "City of Anarchy", which marked the 20th anniversary of the demolition of the Kowloon Walled City.
For the same infographic of Hong Kong's "den of sin", the Spaniard won two prizes in February's Best of News Design contest at the global Society for News Design awards. He also won a silver medal for his portfolio.

He earlier said it took him a month to draw and organise the infographic, published in March last year. At one point, the Kowloon Walled City was crammed with some 500 buildings, housing 50,000 people on 2.7 hectares.

Arranz also brought home four bronze awards from Spain last week. One was for "The Dead Zone", an infographic on the impact of a green algae outbreak on aquatic life, and another was for "Extradition Process", on whistleblower Edward Snowden's options. The others rewarded his portrayal of the city's changing skyline and a look back at Hong Kong in celebration of the 's 110th anniversary.

There were 16 gold medals given out this year, and the 's two wins saw it come second, tied with magazine. The was the biggest winner with six gold medals and a total of 39 prizes.
