Hong Kong Asia Seafood Expo brings record numbers of educated buyers
About 7,500 people attended the three-day event held last week at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, 10 per cent up on last year. And it was the luxury seafood that captured the buyers' attention.
Hot on the heels of the city's first Asia Adult Expo, fish nets were still the order of the day as the 2013 Asian Seafood Expo took over the exhibition centre and drew record visitor numbers.
About 7,500 people attended the three-day event held last week at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, 10 per cent up on last year. And it was the luxury seafood that captured the buyers' attention.
"We are delighted with the success of the expo. Not only did we shatter the previous record for attendance at the event, but buyers were very qualified and exhibitors seemed happy with the results," an Asian Seafood Expo spokeswoman said.
"In terms of the market, a growing middle class in China is creating more demand for imported, premium product."
Companies from Australia, the United States, Denmark, and Canada reported positive feedback and said they would return.
"Increased seafood consumption in China is reflective of an improving economy and growing middle-class," the spokeswoman said. "The expo proved that demand is particularly strong for luxury, premium seafood species."
