Ex-fung shui guru's posts on Christian teachings showed his conversion wasn't fake, friend says
Christianity convert Peter Chan Chun-chuen shared Bible teachings with his intimates hours before learning of his guilty verdict on Thursday.
The last was sent at 2pm.
Leung said Chan quoted chapter 8 of the Epistle of Paul the Apostle to the Romans: "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance with the will of God."
The message went on: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."
Leung said it showed that Chan believed faithfully in God, and had not converted just with the intention of using his new belief as a means to rebuild his image as some had suggested.
Chaos erupted at the High Court main entrance yesterday when dozens of journalists jostled to catch a glimpse of Chan's family members after his sentencing. Some photographers tripped, almost falling, during the commotion.
Chan's wife Tam Miu-ching, younger brother Ricky Chan Chun-kwok and daughter Polly Lon Pui-chun were forced back into the court building.
Ricky Chan and Lon managed to scramble into their car, but Tam was trapped for more than half an hour before she reluctantly consented to stop briefly at the entrance for photographs.
This came after her representative, Kenis Liu Wai-man, shouted angrily at the media, saying: "I don't know why it's happening. If you don't give way, we will have to play a chasing game at another exit."
Tight-lipped Tam showed the jostling media horde a poker face on her way out of the court building and got into a light blue Nissan car.
After she got in, Liu joked: "My shoes almost fell off. It's crazy."
The high-profile court case also sparked gossip among people in the court building.
While Lon was taking the lift downstairs, a man and two women entered it on a different floor, conversing about news that had amused them - apparently referring to the former fung shui guru's jail sentence.
"I couldn't hold in my laughter when I watched the live news broadcast," the man said. "[The result] serves him right."
The woman, who appeared to be a court staff member, replied: "We all wanted to get out … to hear it," in an apparent reference to Chan's sentencing hearing.
