Noisy Chinese toddler ‘locked in dog cage by mother so she can play mahjong’

Woman, 35, tells television report she put her son into cage in Liuyang only ‘briefly’, but denies locking him inside or playing mahjong at the time

A mother in central China locked her noisy toddler son inside a cage for dogs so she could continue to play mahjong, Chinese media reported.

However, the 35-year-old woman, from Daweishan county in Liuyang, Changsha, Hunan province, told local broadcaster Hunan Economic TV that she had placed her three-year-old son inside the empty cage on a street only “briefly”.

She also denied claims by witnesses that she had locked her son inside.

Other children were responsible for locking the cage door, she said.

The woman, surnamed Jiang, also denied that at the time she had been playing mahjong – traditional Chinese game of strategy that usually features four people using 144 tiles containing Chinese characters and symbols.

“I just put him in there for a while, [but] I was not doing this for real.” Jiang was quoted as saying in the report.
