Chinese mother who stole gifts for twin girls with kidney disease gets 300,000 yuan in donations as story goes viral
Chinese internet users donated more than 300,000 yuan (HK$354,000) within three hours after news went viral of a single mother with twin daughters battling kidney disease, who was caught stealing a chicken drumstick and two story books as Children’s Day gifts, mainland media report.
More than 100,000 internet users posted comments about the incident, with most of them expressing sympathy towards the unnamed woman from Xuyi county in Jiangsu province, and describing the things she stole as the “most sad Children’s Day gifts”, the Modern Express reported.
Donations flooded in after news of her plight went viral after a police officer, moved by her story, posted details on his social media account.
“[Wednesday] is Children’s Day and my kids said they wanted presents and they wanted to eat chicken drumsticks,” she said after being questioned by police, the report said.
“They also said they both needed a book called Three Character Primer [an ancient Chinese children’s textbook on civilisation], since all other students at their school have got one.”
