The parents of toddler from Sichuan province donated their son’s organs on Monday after he succumbed to an infection caused by a chopstick piercing his eye, a Chinese newspaper reports.

The parents of the boy, who was 18 months, donated his corneas, liver and kidneys, according to the West China City Daily.

“We already experienced the pain of seeing our son approaching death and being unable to save him,”

his mother, Yue Yanchun, told the newspaper. “We don’t want to see other people go through the same heart-wrenching agony.”

Dr Yan Wei, from the organ transplantation centre at Huaxi Hospital in Chendgu, said the donated organs could save five patients, according to the Daily.
