Shanghai Disney theme park to include Star Wars, Ironman rides, pirate-themed land and Chinese heritage
Entertainment giant announces ambitious key attractions for its first park on the mainland
The Walt Disney Company has unveiled details about its theme park and resort under construction in Shanghai, saying it will boast many "firsts" for the entertainment giant and celebrate China's "rich heritage".
Apart from the largest Disney castle in the world, the US$5.5 billion park's big draws will include the company's first pirate-themed land and its longest parade route yet.
Visitors can also expect attractions based on the Star Wars franchise and Marvel Comics superheroes including Spider Man and Iron Man.
Disney chief Bob Iger said in Shanghai on Wednesday that the park would be "authentically Disney and distinctively Chinese". "We are building something truly special here in Shanghai that not only showcases the best of Disney's storytelling but also celebrates and incorporates China's incredibly rich heritage to create a one-of-a-kind destination that will delight and entertain the people of China for generations to come," Iger said.
The Shanghai version of the Disney Enchanted Storybook Castle would be the tallest, largest and most interactive that the company had built, Disney said. The castle will also be the first to represent all the princesses in the Disney pantheon.
