An accident at a power plant in central China killed 21 people and injured another five, according to mainland media.

A high-pressure steam pipe burst at a coal-fired power station in Dangyang city in Hubei province at 3.20pm on Thursday, news website Cnhubei.com reported.

The injured were being treated at hospital. Three of them suffered serious injuries, the report said.

Rescuers were still searching the site for victims.

Dangyang authorities said an initial investigation suggested the steam pipe broke during testing, Xinhua reported, adding that the probe was continuing.

The State Administration of Work Safety has sent a work group to Dangyang to follow up.
