From Taiwan to the United States: How the world covered Beijing's military parade

Official: Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou, through spokesman Charles Chen

Quote: Chen said that Ma felt "distressed" and "regretful" that a "certain individual" attended the parade, voicing disapproval of former Vice-President Lien Chan's participation. "It deviates from the government's position and people's expectations," Chen said, quoting Ma.

Official: Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga

Quote: It is "extremely regrettable" that Chinese President Xi Jinping's speech on the sidelines of a military parade in Beijing the same day failed to refer to reconciliation with Japan.

"We had requested that this event include elements of reconciliation between Japan and China, not a so-called anti-Japan feature."

Suga was citing a history of friendship between the two countries since normalisation of diplomatic ties in 1972 and two rounds of talks between Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Xi in November last year and April this year.

"But President Xi Jinping made no reference to such elements. I think it was extremely regrettable," the top government spokesman said.

Quote: Urban said the US maintains such commemorations should be about reconciliation and that a "large military display would not appear to be consistent with this theme".

Official: President Truong Tan Sang

Quote: Sang told Xi in their talks yesterday he was glad to attend the parade. "Vietnam hopes to strengthen political trust and personnel exchanges with China, properly handle differences and enhance win-win cooperation."

Official: President Vladimir Putin

Quote: Putin said in his talks with Xi that the parade was impressive. "This year, the PLA and Russian army have participated in commemorative events in each other's nation. This has important meaning. Russia positively affirms the remarks by President Xi on maintaining peace."

Putin stressed the importance of "the way we look at historical issues," noting that the two countries "should not forget the cruelty of the occupiers on the occupied territories" and the conflict's "innumerable victims."

On the economic front, Putin called for deeper Sino-Russian ties, saying that the two countries are ready to face the "turbulence that is happening in the world, in our economies".
