China cautious on fresh commitments ahead of climate change summit
Vice-Premier Zhang Gaoli to announce 'new measures' to combat climate change during UN summit on global warming in New York next week, official says
Vice-Premier Zhang Gaoli is expected to announce "new developments" in the country's efforts to tackle climate change when he addresses a UN climate summit in New York next week, according to a foreign ministry source.
Gao Feng , a senior climate negotiator at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said Zhang was expected to unveil the developments at a UN General Assembly session on Tuesday morning.
The summit is outside of UN negotiations for a new global pact on cutting greenhouse gases after 2020, a deal set to be agreed upon at a meeting in Paris at the end of next year.
Xie Zhenhua , deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission, also said in Beijing yesterday that China would explain "some positive actions" it would take after 2020 at the forum.
Xie said Zhang would "announce China's position on a new agreement" at the summit.
Deng Liangchun , manager of WWF China's climate and energy programme, said the world would be watching whether China, which accounts for 30 per cent of global carbon emissions, would announce when its carbon emissions would peak.
