The capital will launch the nation's strictest water resources regulations to help clean the city's filthy waterways, the reports. Between 800,000 and a million tonnes of untreated wastewater was released into local streams and rivers every day, deputy mayor Lin Keqing told deputies at a municipal people's congress conference on Friday. Officials also suggested raising water treatment charges.

A court in Changping district has imposed jail terms and big fines on two groups who bought diseased pig carcasses and sold the meat mixed with certified pork mince to the public from 2012 to 2013, the reports. The kingpin of one group was jailed for three years and fined 200,000 yuan (HK$253,000), while the leader of the other group was jailed for 31/2 years and fined 150,000 yuan. The remaining 51 members of the two syndicates received sentences of various lengths.
