Nobel Prize 'son-in-law'
The Bengbu No. 1 Middle School has celebrated its link to a top science prize with a message on one of its electronic screens saying "warm congratulations to our school's son-in-law Eric Betzig for being awarded this year's Nobel Prize for chemistry", the news website Anhuinews.com reports. Betzig's wife is Ji Na, who graduated from the middle school in the 1990s. She went on to study at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei . The report said she met her husband while studying for a postgraduate degree in the United States.
20b yuan robotics sector
The provincial government estimates that turnover from the robotic equipment industry in Wuhu , Maanshan and Hefei is expected to reach 20 billion yuan (HK$25 billion) by the end of next year, Anhui Business News reports. The mainland's only robotics industry zone is in Wuhu. Experts said one area of focus for robotic equipment manufacturers was products to help care for the elderly. Firms would target cities such as Beijing and Shanghai where the population is rapidly greying.

Patients in the capital are paying people as much as 1,500 yuan to line up on their behalf for an appointment to see senior doctors at public hospitals, the news website People.com.cn reports. Demand from patients across the country has made seeing top medical staff difficult. People who line up for others to register for an appointment to see a consultant charge from 200 yuan to 1,500 yuan.
Help for poor villages
The city's government has pledged to double the income of 100,000 poor families in 430 villages around the capital by 2020, the news website Chinanews.com reports. The authorities plan to increase subsidies to develop agriculture and to improve infrastructure in the areas.

Divorce case deadlock
A woman whose husband left her nine years ago and has not been seen since has had her application for a divorce rejected, the Chongqing Morning Post reports. The court said the information she gave about her husband's identity card matched that of a man in Guangxi whom she did not know, so the case could not proceed. The husband left their home in Jiangbei district in 2005 after the couple had an argument.
2 die at building site
Two workers died in an accident at a construction site in Dazu district on Monday, the news website Chinanews.com reports. The workers were helping to build a hotel at the site. An investigation is under way, according to the report.

Planner on trial
The former director of the urban planning department in Shantou has stood trial on bribe-taking charges, the Southern Metropolis News reports. Zhu Jiadong denied taking 1.1 million yuan and HK$440,000 in kickbacks from 11 property developers to approve their projects. He said he had been framed. The court in Guangzhou will announce its verdict later.
Gambling rings busted
Police in Guangzhou have broken up two internet gambling rings, arresting 45 people, the news website Chinanews.com reports. More than 300 police officers from Huadu district were involved in the operation. The suspects told police they launched the gambling websites at the start of the year and about 100 million yuan had been bet through their online operations.

Elderly pair die in fire
An elderly couple from a village near Suihua died in a fire at their home, the news website Chinanews.com reports. The blaze erupted early on Tuesday morning. The authorities have ruled out arson and believe the fire was probably started by accident. The couple, both in their 70s, have one son who lives outside the province, according to the report.
Kindergarten fines
Kindergartens in Harbin face fines of up to 10,000 yuan if they teach materials designed for primary school children, the news website Hljnews.cn reports. The nursery schools could also have their licences revoked for serious offences. The report did not say why such a dim view was taken of kindergartens' teaching lessons designed for older children.

Teens' love plans dashed
A 17-year-old boy was arrested on rape charges in Enshi after he planned to leave his home province of Zhejiang with a 13-year-old girl he met online, the news website Chinanews.com reports. Under mainland law, sex with an underage girl, with or without her consent, is treated as rape. Police were alerted when the girl went missing last week after leaving home to go to school. She was later found at a long-distance bus station with her boyfriend. She has been returned safely to her parents.
Temple scam arrest
A man has been arrested in Shiyan for an alleged fraud involving the rebuilding of a temple, the news website Chinanews.com reports. The man is said to be part of a group that raised 120 million yuan to rebuild the religious site in Dayin in Zhejiang province last year, but then made off with the cash. More than 100 people were cheated in the scam. The man has yet to be charged. Police are still looking for other suspects.

Dropped-phone lawsuit
A mother and her daughter from Changchun are considering suing a bus company after a driver refused to stop after the younger woman dropped her phone out of the window, the news website Chinajilin.com.cn reports. A lawyer said that if the mother and daughter were able to find a witness backing up their story they might have a chance of claiming damages.
Jailed for corruption
A court in Yanbian prefecture has convicted a former vice-chairman of the main political advisory body in Guangxi of corruption, Chinajilin.com.cn reports. Li Daqiu has been jailed for 15 years after being found guilty of taking bribes worth 109.5 million yuan in the 10 years up to last year. His political rights were also suspended for four years and his assets, valued at 2 million yuan, were seized, the report said.

More cultural centres
The city had built 215 community cultural centres by the end of last year, Jiefang Daily reports. The building programme forms part of efforts to improve the cultural life of the city. The authorities said they had turned down bids by property developers in prime areas to ensure that the cultural centres were given priority.
Greener buildings
The city's government says buildings covering about 12 million square metres have been built with energy-saving and more environmentally friendly materials, the Shanghai Morning Post reports. The city authorities introduced a building code in the second half of the year to force developers of buildings with a footprint of at least 20,000 square metres to meet greener construction standards, including installation of renewable energy sources.
