Holiday's over for 'robber'
A man wanted over a robbery in Heilongjiang province was caught by police in the capital's North Train Station on Saturday morning as he took his mother on a short trip to the city for the National Day holiday, the Beijing  Morning Post reports. The man was wanted for allegedly robbing a woman at knifepoint of 400 yuan (HK$505) and taking her mobile phone in late June. He was caught in routine station security checks.
Tour guide crackdown
Police have stepped up a crackdown on illegal tour guides around Tiananmen Square, the Beijing Times reports. Three unlicensed tour agents were caught and detained by last Friday. Seventy-two others were fined. Some 490 tickets for the Forbidden City, the former imperial palace, were seized from scalpers. Plainclothes police officers are carrying out the checks during the National Day holiday.

Air pollution forecasts
A seven-day air quality forecast service has been set up in Guangzhou, Foshan and Shenzhen, Xinhua reports. The service includes forecasts for PM2.5, the fine particles in air pollution most damaging to health. Zhuhai, Dongguan, Zhongshan, Huizhou, Jiangmen and Zhaoqing are expected to join the system by the end of the year. Shantou, Shaoguan and Maoming are due to join by next June.
Violent father detained
A 36-year-old father from Shantou turned himself in to the police after he allegedly beat and abused his young son after his wife left him, the New Express reports. The man ran away after the case was exposed on social media two weeks ago, with photographs posted online of the scarred boy. The photos prompted public outrage, and the son is now in the care of his grandfather. Police are investigating.

Political heritage listed
The political customs of the Dong ethnic minority in Liping county near Qiandongnan have been listed as part of the country's intangible cultural heritage, the news website Chinanews.com reports. Customs handed down for generations rule that a noble and respected person should become the group's leader and that people who break the group's laws should by tried by the whole community. The report said the social code had helped ensure the peace and stability of the Dong people. The ethnic group lives mainly in Guizhou, Hunan and Guangxi .
Rail line safety checks
A new fast train is doing test runs from Guiyang to Congjiang county until Wednesday, the New Express reports. It is part of preparations ahead of the opening of the Guizhou-to-Guangzhou high-speed rail link by the end of the year. The train, with a maximum speed of 380km/h, is also being used in safety checks on the line. The rail link, which is seen as a major project to link the underdeveloped west of the country to wealthy Guangdong and Hong Kong, is expected to cut travel time between Guiyang and Guangzhou from 22 hours to four.

Knife attack on wife
A 37-year-old man who attacked his wife with a kitchen knife because she would not give him any money has been given a six-month suspended prison sentence by a court in Wuhan, Chutian Metropolis Daily reports. The court heard the man's wife was in charge of his salary so they could pay back their debts. After his repeated pleas for cash were rejected, the man rushed into the kitchen in July last year and tried to hack at his wife. She was not seriously injured and she has forgiven her husband.
Six killed at paper mill
Two officials at a paper mill in Honghu have been arrested after five workers and a manager died from inhaling poisonous fumes on Friday, the news website Chinanews.com reports. Five people died at the scene and another on the way to hospital after they tried to clean a processing tank at the mill.

Fireworks factory ban
A five-year ban on permits for new coal mines and fireworks factories has been introduced in the province, Xinhua reports. The directive was issued after an accident two weeks ago in Liling where 14 people died and 33 others were injured in an explosion at a fireworks plant. Four people also died and six were injured in a gas blast at a coal mine in Lengshuijiang in March.
Lost on long march
A poor rubbish scavenger who aimed to walk about 2,000km from Guangxi province to Shanxi in the north of the country was found to have gone hundreds of kilometres in the wrong direction, the Xiao Xiang Chen Bao reports. The man, 50, was spotted on the border between Hunan and Jiangxi provinces . He was on his way home to Huairen county near Shuozhou and had walked 500km by the time he was spotted. Officials said they would help him get home.

Man 'shot mother'
Nanchang police detained a 27-year-old man on Saturday for allegedly shooting his mother, the news website Jxnews.com.cn reports. Police received a report from a hospital saying a woman had been admitted with a gunshot wound. The son had a history of drug abuse and fled the scene with his wife after allegedly shooting his mother with a homemade firearm.
Baby snatched at hospital
A woman and two men have been arrested in Ganzhou for allegedly stealing a two-day-old baby boy from a hospital, Jiangxi TV reports. The woman, who is infertile and had wanted to adopt a child, dressed up as a nurse and took the baby from a hospital ward. The trio was traced by examining security video at the hospital. They were arrested the next day. The baby has been returned to his parents.

High-level proposal
A man from Xian almost failed to propose to his girlfriend on Friday because the top of the high peak at Mt Hua was so crowded with tourists there was nowhere to go down on one knee and ask her to marry him, the news website Cnwest.com reports. He had first met his girlfriend on the viewing deck at the mountain five years ago. He proposed in the cable car instead. She said yes.
Muggers punished
Two men have been punished and fined by a court in Ningqiang county near Hanzhong for carrying out a mugging, Xinhua reports. They beat a man with a belt and a wooden stick and also stole cash from a Buddhist temple. One was jailed for 10 months and the other was given a suspended prison sentence.

Commercial centre plan
Building work has started on a big commercial complex in Lhasa , the news website Tibet.cn reports. It will include shopping malls, offices and hotels. It is due to open in 2017.
Buddhist discovery
A large sculpture of Buddha and eight Buddhist followers has been found carved into a rock face in Markam county in Chamdo prefecture, Xinhua reports. The work is carved in a stretch of rock nine metres high. Researchers from the Tibetan Academy of Social Sciences believe the work was created more than 1,000 years ago.
