While we wait for Bond 25, here are 5 exotic James Bond holiday locations licensed to thrill

Daniel Craig’s fifth Bond film, provisionally known as Bond 25, is scheduled for release in April 2020.

With filming underway for the new James Bond movie, Bond 25, we reveal some of the best all-time Bond-based holiday locations that each come with an official licence to thrill.

Jamaica

Not only one of the locations for Bond 25, Jamaica is also home to one of the franchise’s most famous film scenes – when Ursula Andress as Honey Ryder emerges from the sea in Dr No. This was captured on the sands of Laughing Waters Beach and Dunn’s River Falls near Ocho Rios, however there’s much more to explore on the Caribbean’s most charismatic island. Go diving and snorkelling, hike the Blue Mountains, feast on goat curry roti, and after sunset uncover Jamaica’s vibrant music, from traditional sounds of the Taino Indians to today’s dance hall scene.

Stay: Bond author Ian Fleming’s tropical villa, where he wrote 14 of the books, still sits at Oracabessa and is part of the laid back and luxe GoldenEye resort. Surrounded by trees on three sides, Fleming Villa overlooks a golden beach, boasts glassless windows, and the decor is a cool mix of African and Balinese with antiques and a beachcomber vibe. His cottage is available for private rental alongside hip beach villas and huts.

Brazil

Iguaza Falls

Moonraker sees Bond in Brazil fighting with the indomitable Jaws on a cable-car at Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro before ending up at Iguazu Falls on the Argentinian border. Don’t worry – your holiday doesn’t have to include the same. Enjoy panoramic views and hiking around splendid waterfalls without baddies chasing you, marvel at Christ the Redeemer and the Corcovado, laze on golden beaches, try cycling and sailing, and immerse yourself in the intoxicating samba-fuelled nightlife.

Belmond das Cataratas

Stay: Belmond das Cataratas is a Portuguese-colonial beauty bathed in pink which overlooks the fabulous Iguazu Falls so it feels like you have them all to yourself. Rooms and suites are filled with plantation grandeur, artisan fabrics, local art and spiritual elegance. Meanwhile, Belmond Copacabana is an utterly decadent property overlooking Copacabana Beach. For a slice of the high-life, book into one of the seven penthouse suites that share a black swimming pool surrounded by plants.

Udaipur

Taj Lake Palace lily pond, Rajasthan

Occupying a four-acre island in the middle of Lake Pichola, with a backdrop of the Aravalli Mountains, Taj Lake Palace doubles as Octopussy’s lair in the film of the same name, with the dining room, terrace and hotel barge appearing in various scenes. The hotel’s lily pond is also featured when Bond girl Octopussy goes for a naked swim (not recommended). Keep your clothes on and explore the colourful bazaars, enjoy serene boat rides, discover palaces temples and havelis, and immerse yourself in mystery, magic and romance.

Stay: On location of course. The Bond experience at Taj Lake Palace begins before you even arrive, with a vintage car and boat ride transferring you to the property. Once here, you can expect nothing but royal treatment as you relax among interiors that are delightfully romantic, combining Old World opulence with contemporary sophistication. Take a sunset cruise, sail aboard the Jiva Spa Boat, or have a consultation with an astrologer (perhaps what 007 should have done before deciding to mess with a mollusc-obsessed Bond girl).

Istanbul

View of Golden Horn bay from Galata Tower, Istanbul.

Bond film producer Barbara Broccoli claims that Istanbul was author Ian Fleming’s favourite city, which might explain why this Byzantine/Ottoman dreamscape has frequently doubled up as a film set. Make like the man himself in From Russia With Love and visit the Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern. Head to Kiz Kulesi, an 11th-century lighthouse on the Bosphorus where M is kept prisoner in The World Is Not Enough, and discover the Grand Bazaar, Eminonu Square and the New Mosque where Bond scrambles around on a motorcycle in Skyfall. See the Istanbul Modern art gallery, eat fresh fried fish straight from the harbour boats, sail along the Golden Horn, and watch out for spies lurking behind the Turkish delight stalls …

Stay: Four Seasons Istanbul at Sultanahmet used to be a late-Ottoman prison so it has a movie story all of its own. Showcasing neoclassical style, pointy arched windows and decorative tile panels, it comes with glamorous rooms, knockout facilities, and Bond pilgrimage tours are available. Grab a drink (a martini – shaken, not stirred – natch) on A’ya Terrace where The Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia will wink at you from the rooftop.

Egypt

Luxor

The Spy Who Loved Me whisked our favourite secret agent to two of Egypt’s greatest sites – the vast religious complex of Abu Simbel on the bank of Lake Nasser, and the Karnak temple at Luxor. He’s also seen around Cairo’s old Mosque of Ibn Tulun and the adjoining mansion of Fekkesh which nowadays is the Gayer-Anderson-Museum, showing arts from different Islamic epochs. While in Cairo, it would be rude not to include the pyramids and bustling tourist market, Khan al-Khalili, in your itinerary.

Stay: With sweeping deserts, ancient temples and tombs, mesmerising Islamic art and a fascinating underwater world to pack into your schedule, take to the seas on a chic boat and sail along the mighty River Nile as part of your itinerary. The elegant cabins on the cruise ships with Sanctuary Retreats come with art-deco styling, private bathrooms and epic views. Cabanas dot the pool area, there’s a games room and gym, and gourmet cuisine is prepared by award-winning chefs. Bond would definitely approve.
