While it is sad that Disney axed Li Shang from the 2020 release of Mulan, many will be excited by the prospect of watching the on-screen romance unfold between Mulan (played by Liu Yifei) and Chen Honghui (played by Yoson An).

Yoson’s part is expected to be a breakout role for the 27-year-old who appeared in HBO Asia’s horror miniseries Grace. The Macau-born, New Zealand-raised actor doesn’t have much presence on social media with only 5,500 Instagram followers, but fans are sure to be swooning after they see him kicking butt in the Mulan live-action remake. Read on to learn more about the low-key leading man.

Active lifestyle

He plays a fierce warrior in the movie, but what does he do to keep fit and active in real life? Yoson can be found rock climbing, powerlifting, weightlifting and kayaking.

He is impressive at martial arts as he is well versed in kick-boxing, ninjutsu and has a black belt in karate. He has definitely got the athleticism to pull off such a physically demanding role.

Down to earth

Yoson enjoys the simple things in life, and there is certainly no “doing it for the gram”.

He is fond of animals and not just for cuddles, but as meditation partners. He enjoys sharing inspirational passages and achieving inner peace with crystals, stones and white sage. Yoson, whose star sign is Cancer, has an innate sensitivity and emotional connection with the world around him.

Yoson shares book recommendations with his fans and seems to enjoy fiction and motivational books. His upbringing in New Zealand would explain why he enjoys being surrounded by nature. We love a guy that is active, fit and in touch with his softer side.

Sweet tooth

Don’t let the chiselled body fool you. Yoson enjoys indulging in mammoth milkshakes, cakes and ice cream.

Judging from his pictures it’s safe to say he’s a chocolate guy. Perfect for the inner kid in all of us, he also shares a love for Kinder chocolate and Kinder Surprise Eggs.

Creative type

Yoson shares his sketches on social media, which shows that he’s in touch with his creative side and not afraid to explore different art forms beyond acting.

He is also a passionate filmmaker and recently released the first project that he had written and directed on his own. The short film, Between The Parallel, is about a young girl who tries to escape from reality by portraying herself as a goddess.

The film explores the parallel between the main character’s battle for freedom as a goddess, as well as her own internal struggles to find freedom in real life. Check out the profile below and Yoson’s heartfelt post on Facebook about sharing his project.

Could he be Mr Right?

It is unclear whether Yoson is attached, but he is not married. He is the kind of guy you could take home to meet your parents. In a Q2 podcast, he admitted to failing economics and finance, but he’s got it where it counts.

Yoson is fluent in Mandarin, English and Cantonese. He is well read, and stays abreast of the Tao Te Ching. However, he can’t read or write Chinese characters. There is light at the end of the tunnel. We are sure he’s willing to continue to learn. In a recent interview he credited his Tawainese ex-girlfriend with helping him to improve his Mandarin skills which helped to land roles.
