The list of Malaysians making their mark on the stages of London’s West End theatres is growing slowly, but surely.

Sean Ghazi blazed the trail in 2000 with appearances in The King and I, Miss Saigon and Rent.

Last year, journalist-turned-actor Jon Chew portrayed the role of Prince Chulalongkorn in the Tony Award-winning Broadway revival of The King and I’s stint in London and now you can catch actor and singer Zheng Xi Yong on an international tour with the British ensemble of Miss Saigon.

The latest name to join their ranks is theatre practitioner Aaron Teoh, who is taking over the role of Prince Chulalongkorn from Chew in the forthcoming tour in England and Ireland of The King and I.

No stranger to Malaysia’s performing arts scene, Teoh first made his theatre debut in Pan Production’s staging of Merrily Roll Along.

He moved to London in late 2017, accompanying his wife who was there to study a master’s degree in comparative Education.

Teoh had to get through four auditions including one involving dancing and then two involving acting, before he landed the role of King Mongkut’s eldest son.

The tour of The King and I kicks off on April 26, with Annalene Beechey playing Anna Leonowens and Jose Llana in the role of the King of Siam for the Manchester, Dublin and Sunderland theatre performances.

Before then, Teoh will be in Malaysia for a short break, where he will be singing at the WVC Jazz Ensemble’s “Give Thy Ear” – two evenings of music inspired by Shakespeare taking place on March 5 and 6 at Lit Books, in Selangor.

Here’s a taste of what to expect:
