There is much to know about Tessa Thompson, the Los Angeles-born American actress known for playing strong female characters in hit television series and major blockbuster films.

The 35-year-old’s numerous roles include those she played in the historical drama Selma, the superhero films Avengers: Endgame and Thor: Ragnarok and the HBO sci-fi thriller, Westworld. Most recently she has starred in Men In Black: International, alongside Avengers and Thor star Chris Hemsworth.

Thompson is an outspoken actress, but is also very private about her personal life. Yet we’ve uncovered some interesting facts about her that make us love this talented actress even more.

She loves goats, is a fierce activist, and is a talented singer-songwriter. She’s also vocal about her sexuality. Check out why Thompson’s loyal fan base continues to grow.

1. She doesn’t do ‘labels’

There has been much talk about Thompson’s rumoured relationship with American singer-actress Janelle Monae, but this doesn’t faze her at all.

She has often said that while she is attracted to both men and women; she doesn’t use the word bisexual because she doesn’t think in terms of binaries.

Thompson has also mentioned that in her family everyone is respected for being who they are.

Aside from her sexuality, she has also expressed similar views when it comes to her biracial identity: Thompson, whose father is of Afro-Panamanian descent and whose mother is of European and Mexican descent, remains unapologetically herself, and we support her for that.

2. She loves goats

Thompson says goats are her favourite animal. Last year she said: “I want to adopt a pygmy goat and name it Gal Dagoat [after Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot], because Wonder Woman rocks.

3. She’s a singer-songwriter

A love of singing runs deep in her roots. Her father, Marc Anthony Thompson, is also the singer-songwriter with a music collective, Chocolate Genius, Inc. At one time she belonged to an indie electro-soul band, Caught A Ghost.

In 2014, Tessa’s on-screen co-stars from comedy drama Dear White People and her former band mates came together for the music video Get Your Life, featured on the soundtrack of the film.

That was not the last time Thompson combined her acting and singing talents as she not only starred in 2015’s sports drama, Creed, and its 2018 follow-up, Creed II, but also co-wrote and performed songs in the film.

4. She’s an activist

OK, we probably all knew this, as Thompson has been active in the Time’s Up movement against sexual harassment, but she is up front about politics and continues to break down barriers with roles that traditionally she might not have been expected to play.

She has even hosted events at the American Sundance Film Festival in Utah which directly address discrimination in Hollywood.

However, did you know her activism started at a young age?

As a teenager at Santa Monica High School, Thompson was heavily involved in theatre and played Hermia in the student production of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

Even with a busy schedule she found time for activism. She also created the “racial harmony club”, which hosted sleepovers for children from different backgrounds.

5. She went ‘catfishing’ once or twice

While I’m sure some of us would love to see some steamy off-screen chemistry from Thompson and often co-star, Hemsworth, the two are certainly not an item. The Australian actor has been married to Spanish actress Elsa Pataky since 2010 and they have three children.

When it comes to dating, Thompson has stated that she is really not into online dating.

However, she did admit to “catfishing” – pretending to be someone else online – once or twice with her friends. She said it wasn’t a pleasant experience, and usually ended with a DELETE. Other than this juicy titbit, Thompson sticks to keeping her dating life private.

Why not? In today’s world a girl has got to keep something for herself.
