The year of Covid-19 taught us what really matters – that’s why sustainable Christmas decorations are 2020’s festive trend, and they’re as gorgeous as they are Earth-friendly
Which Hong Kong restaurant is serving up the best Christmas eats?
Home furnishing specialists Indigo Living recently launched a Christmas gift guide to celebrate those precious moments we shared with loved ones, especially during this challenging year.
“This Christmas will be one that everyone remembers”, says John McLennan, founder and executive chairman of Indigo Living. “With travel mostly restricted, the trend is not so much what colour is in or what decoration is the most popular – it is more about how you spend the time with loved ones. Whether it is with family or friends, everyone is looking at what this means.
“For us, living beautifully is all about time with family and friends, and being supportive in the community, not only during the holiday season but all year round.”
Whether it is a traditional snowy pine cone and red berry wreath for the front door to welcome visitors, gold, silver and other decorative baubles to dress up a tree, or classics such as Nutcracker figurines, Indigo Living offers a wealth of festive Christmas decor to make the season brighter. Dog lovers in particular will adore Gisela Graham’s assortment of resin dogs that double as tree and table ornaments.

Tree’s variation on evergreen Christmas ideas is a crafty and sustainable solution that injects immediate charm to the home. “We are becoming increasingly aware of how our purchases can have an impact on the planet, and are starting to invest in timeless, sustainable items that can be used season after season”, explains Kate Babington, managing director with Tree.
“Look for Christmas decorative accessories made from renewable, natural materials such as rattan and silong-pugo (a climbing vine), which add plenty of textural interest and character to your decor. They have a warm and rustic appeal that is well suited for the holiday season.”
Tree’s silong-pugo and rattan Christmas trees and reindeers add a fun, earthy vibe to any room. Handmade in the Philippines from offcuts, the trees come in three sizes for mixing and matching. Rudolph and his mates are ready for reindeer games, while the life-size Arctic deer, also made from silong-pugo, is certain to be a hit. Table-top versions of wooden reindeers add a rustic charm to mealtimes when paired with glowing candles in ceramic candle holders and tin Santas that double as whimsical place card holders for dinner parties.

Known for its classic collection of East meets West furnishings and accessories, Altfield brings a glamorous touch to the table with a range of beautiful silver ornaments.
“With the rise of conscious consumption, investing in quality and timeless purchases is an important factor for me,” states Victoria Cheung, sales and marketing manager from Altfield Enterprises. “This Christmas season, I have my eye on Altfield silverware, which are beautiful investments. These handcrafted solid silver objects combine form with function, and are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. In addition to being wonderful gifts, they are also great for festive table settings.”
Created in partnership with Asian silversmiths, the pieces are inspired by Chinese and Southeast Asian motifs. They are then reworked to combine old and new ideas for contemporary pieces to grace a table or a shelf. Delicate leaf-shaped vessels, bowls featuring stylised peonies, and deer figurines are just a few of the highly detailed silverware in the collection.
To bring the outdoors inside during the chilly months, look to Lane Crawford for a flourish of greenery.
“We are seeing this year’s Christmas decor to be very much about organic, nature and sustainable living,” notes Tracy Kwan, Lane Crawford’s director of lifestyle. “We are very excited to be bringing London’s Petersham Nurseries exclusively to our stores, so we are looking at an abundance of indoor plants as well as items with floral designs and motifs instead of the traditional Christmas tree. From local florist Ellermann, we are also launching a range of trim-a-tree, wreaths and hampers that are more rustic, with elements of nature.”

Fluted and handblown glass vases filled with pine branches, holly and other wintry plants are creative ways to decorate every room while adding a touch of nature indoors. Add a few moss vases styled with greenery by Petersham Nurseries, or a custom made wreath courtesy of Ellermann, and the holiday season will feel like a walk through a snowy wood.
For a splash of colour, go for Dogale’s Stelle collection of bowls in the shape of stars, available in three sizes in both red or gold from Exclusivités. They are sure to be a focal point for conversations for years to come, making these holidays all the more memorable.
