Review / We review Denim Unspun, and the great custom-fit jeans we got is a good sign of where sustainable fashion is going

Overall: 8.5

Turn-ons:

Innovative sustainable material feels soft, high quality

The scan is quick, it takes about 5 minutes to disrobe to your undies and get scanned

Select options that suit your fitting preferences – tapered, loose, thread colour

Resulting fit exceeded expectations – not too loose, not too tight

Received the pair in two weeks which is fairly fast delivery time for custom fit jeans

Turn-offs:

Need to go to the store or location with a 3D infrared scanner at least once or when you’ve changed weight significantly. The main stores are in Hong Kong and San Francisco.

Be sure to wash them separately the first time so the colour doesn’t run, but feel good about the fact that the jeans didn’t go through extensive washing and acid.

I’ve been searching for the perfect pair of jeans ever since my favourite pair became so worn and had so many holes that they were irreparable. They fitted so well and got more comfortable with each wear and wash. Oh how I miss that pair of jeans. I wish I had bought a few more pairs. I’ve gone to many stores, but the fit never seems right. I’d walk in, grab my usual size, but it always resulted in a “Goldilocks” experience, with the fit either too loose or too tight in one area or another. When I saw Denim Unspun’s booth, I was pretty sceptical as my experience with scanning technology had not been successful.

How does the scanning work? Is it safe?

They use infrared sensors to map out the shape of your body and take your measurements, then use the 3D shape of your body, cut into flat panels of material to construct your jeans and sew together. Since infrared is the same as what your television remote uses to power on/off and change channels, it should be pretty safe to get your body scanned.

What is the scan like?

I did a walk through with their team in my YouTube video. It’s fairly simple and there is someone to assist you in the process. You enter your details, step into a curtained booth, strip down to your underwear, and stand on a rotating pedestal for about 1 minute as if you were a new car waiting to be unveiled.

Is there only one type of jeans?

After you’ve gone through the scan, you can select whether the jeans should be tighter fitting or loose, tapered or rolled up, waste huggers or low riders, and the colour of the stitching among other options.

What are the jeans made of, denim?

All of the materials are meant to encourage sustainability and reduce waste where you can choose different types such as one made of chitin from shrimp shells, another of recycled coffee grounds. They only sell dark jeans because they say lighter pairs of jeans require more water for washing as well as acids that damage the environment.

Isn’t it going to take forever to get them?

I was surprised they were delivered to my door in about two weeks. That’s fast for jeans tailored to my body.

Are these jeans going to save the planet?

Some big brands have so much left over inventory from needing to carry different sizes in waist and pants length, they burn unpurchased clothes. So I like the fact that the company birthed from the purpose of minimising wasted materials while providing you with a great pair of jeans.

What about panache?

These jeans work for a casual day out, but also look good with a blazer. They are super comfy and fit my body well.

Should it be on my wish list?

Yes, the process was a breeze, and the fit was great so I’d say if you’ve had a hard time finding a pair of jeans that work for your body shape, give them a try. It’s too bad you need to be near San Francisco or Hong Kong to get scanned, but if you want to get a pair, you can inquire about getting a gym scan, as the technology is the same.

I’m a little heartbroken … part of the fun is going to the store and trying stuff on, and just like Amazon has changed retail, mark my words, the process of buying a pair of jeans this way will be woven into your future.
