After recently raising eyebrows for a controversial music video set in a Catholic church, as well as for her “vulgar” live ad libs, the “Nonsense” singer has hit back at speculation that she’s “obnoxiously horny” – while starring in a racy campaign for Kim Kardashian’s shapewear brand, Skims.

From making her start as a young Disney actress to touring the world with Taylor Swift on her Eras Tour and topping Billboard charts, Carpenter’s rise to fame has been meteoric.

Here’s what we know about the showbiz world’s latest “It” girl.

While Carpenter, 24, has quite a few acting credits to her name, she is best known for her lead roles on the Disney Channel, including in the comedy TV series Girl Meets World and the 2016 adventure comedy film Adventures in Babysitting.

Aside from her success as a Disney darling, the young starlet also appeared in the 2019 Netflix original movie Tall Girl, and its sequel in 2022. The multifaceted actress also starred in and was an executive producer for the 2020 dance comedy film Work It.

She has always wanted to perform

While many people Carpenter’s age may still be finding their way in life, the “Feather” singer knew from a very early age that she was destined for the stage. Born and raised in Pennsylvania, Carpenter was home-schooled and began vocal training at just six years old.

“I know a lot of people don’t know what they want to do when they’re that young, but I had a pretty good idea, and my heart was pretty much set on it,” Carpenter said in a February interview with Prestige.

By 2020, the songstress already had four albums under her belt. However, her 2022 album Emails I Can’t Send – featuring the hit songs “Nonsense” and “Feather” – is what catapulted her to the status of pop culture icon.

The Olivia Rodrigo-Taylor Swift drama

Carpenter and “Vampire” songstress Olivia Rodrigo had a very publicised feud in 2021 after the two were seemingly involved in a love triangle with actor and singer Joshua Bassett. With Rodrigo releasing the song “Driver’s License” and Carpenter firing back with “Skin” – both of which were believed to allude to said feud – the drama was closely followed by fans and the media.

Both Disney alums have mentioned being fans of Swift since they were little, according to media reports. Originally, Rodrigo, 21, appeared to be the one building a relationship with the “Lover” singer, with Swift, 34, even gifting the younger artist a ring similar to one she wore while making her Red album, per US media.

However, fans noticed that the two artists’ relationship soured after Rodrigo was forced to credit Swift and her co-writers – and relinquish 50 per cent of her royalties – on Rodrigo’s song “Deja Vu” for its passing resemblance to Swift’s “Cruel Summer”. Swift’s subsequent closeness with Rodrigo’s “nemesis”, Carpenter, seemed to further cement the rift.

Sabrina Carpenter’s dating history

Aside from her rumoured relationship with Bassett, Carpenter has reportedly been linked to singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes and Teen Wolf actor Dylan O’ Brien. Her current romance is with Saltburn actor Barry Keoghan. The two seemingly confirmed their relationship last month, when they appeared together on the Vanity Fair Oscars red carpet.

She isn’t afraid of controversy

Carpenter came under fire recently, after she released the music video for her song “Feather” last Halloween.

The video – which, at the time of writing, has racked up over 43 million views on YouTube – was filmed in a Catholic church in Brooklyn, New York City, and features Carpenter dancing in a short black tulle dress with a veil against the backdrop of an altar decorated with pastel-coloured coffins.

The Diocese of Brooklyn said it was “appalled” by the video, and the priest who permitted its shooting was stripped of his administrative duties, per The New York Times.

Staying true to her coquettish persona, Carpenter brushed off the controversy, stating in a November 2023 interview with Variety that permission to film inside the church had been granted in advance. “And Jesus was a carpenter,” she added, in a cheeky reference to her own name.

Carpenter has also addressed concerns about her sexually explicit live ad libs for the outro to her viral single “Nonsense”, which she performed during Swift’s Eras Tour.

“I think people think I’m just obnoxiously horny,” she said in a March interview with Cosmopolitan. “In reality, writing [the outros] comes from the ability to not be fearful of your sexuality, as opposed to just not being able to put it down.”
