Where is Amanda Knox, almost 10 years since her exoneration? She’ll be played by Margaret Qualley in a new Hulu series about her murder charge acquittal – she’s also become a mum and a podcaster

It’s been 16 years since American then exchange student Amanda Knox’s life was thrown into international chaos on a fateful day back in November 2007. Knox was initially convicted of murdering her British exchange student housemate Meredith Kercher in the university town of Perugia, Italy, when she was 20 years old.

Knox served nearly four years with her then-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito for the crime before their convictions were quashed and they were freed. But where is Amanda Knox now and how has her life changed as a 36-year-old free woman? Here’s what we know …

Amanda Knox has started a family

Knox found love and married poet and author Christopher Robinson in 2018. The pair welcomed baby daughter Eureka Muse Knox-Robinson in 2021, and in 2023, during a podcast episode, Knox revealed that she had a second child, a son named Echo, in September.

She remains fiercely private about her children, and took to Instagram to explain why: “Since my exoneration, I’ve struggled to reclaim my identity and protect the people I love from being exploited as tabloid content.

“It’s not easy, and I often feel like I’m trying to invent good choices out of bad whole cloth. I know that I cannot 100 per cent protect my daughter from the kind of treatment I’ve suffered, but I’m doing the best I can. Which is why this will be the only picture of her I will ever share on social media.”

She’s become a podcaster

These days, Knox is an avid podcast host. Her podcast The Truth about True Crime with Amanda Knox, produced by husband Robinson, ran for four seasons. The couple also co-host two shows together – Labyrinths, a podcast about navigating “personal mazes” in life, and Younglings, which is about raising children.

She wants to make a difference

After Knox was freed and exonerated by Italy’s highest court in 2015, she’s passionately been working with the Innocence Project – a non-profit organisation dedicated to fighting wrongful convictions. In addition, Knox is a journalist and writer who wrote a memoir called Waiting to Be Heard in 2013.

Her legal troubles aren’t over just yet

Knox was sentenced to three years already served in 2011 for “falsely implicating” Patrick Lumumba, a Congolese bar owner, during her murder investigation. Even though she was eventually acquitted for the murder, Knox’s conviction for slandering Lumumba was upheld at the time. Italy’s highest court ordered a new trial in October 2023.

Knox wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “Though I was exonerated for murder, I remained wrongly convicted of slander. Now, I am no longer a convicted person. And I will fight with my lawyers to prove my innocence once and for all.”

The real killer, an Ivorian drifter called Rudy Guede, was sentenced in 2008 to 30 years for murder and sexual assault. His prison sentence was later cut to 16 years.

There’s a new TV series about her

Knox’s story is back in the spotlight after it was announced that Margaret Qualley will be the latest actress to take on the role. Qualley will play Knox in an eight-episode Hulu series, which Knox herself is executive producing alongside Monica Lewinsky. According to a statement, the show is “based on the true story of how Knox was wrongfully convicted for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher and her 16-year odyssey to set herself free”.

It won’t be the first time the story has been portrayed on screen – in 2016, Netflix released a documentary film, Amanda Knox. Hayden Panettiere played her in 2011 true crime film Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial. The 2021 movie Stillwater starring Matt Damon is also widely believed to be inspired by her story.

  • Amanda Knox’s ordeal in Italy, where she was wrongfully convicted of the murder of her then roommate, will be the subject of a new Hulu series co-executive-produced by Monica Lewinsky
