In Hollywood films, all romances start with a meet-cute ... and sometimes this does happen in real life too, from Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively’s slow-burn relationship to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s instant fairy-tale connection.

This Valentine’s Day, we have a little treat for all Style readers who are hopeless romantics and believers of love at first sight. Here are five adorable, occasionally awkward first dates featuring our favourite couples that could appear straight out of a romcom.

1. Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds

Gossip Girl star Lively and Deadpool’s Reynolds first met in 2010 on the set of Green Lantern, but they were both seeing other people at the time. It wasn’t until a year later, when the newly single co-stars decided to go on a double date, that sparks really flew – although they had been on the date with other people, not each other, awkwardly enough!

“She was on a date with another guy, and I was on a date with another girl. That was the most awkward date, probably, because we were just like fireworks coming across,” recalled Reynolds in a 2016 interview with Entertainment Weekly.

The pair have been married for 11 years and recently welcomed their fourth child together in 2023.

2. Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox

American rapper MGK and actress Megan Fox began dating in 2020 and have been engaged since 2022. The pair are known for flaunting their intense bond on social media and giving the public glimpses into their relationship (like how they occasionally drink each other’s blood).

So it came as no surprise when MGK revealed on the Ellen DeGeneres Show that, for their first date, the passionate pair climbed a three-storey building to see the view from a rooftop. There are even images of Fox dangerously climbing down from the balcony in a pair of heels.

3. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle experienced an instant connection when they first met each other, after being set up on a blind date by a mutual friend in 2016.

In their engagement interview with People in 2017, the Duke of Sussex recalled that the pair immediately hit it off and went on back-to-back dates in the following days in London.

In a 2020 video for Vogue, model Barbara Palvin and actor Dylan Sprouse recounted their adorable and slightly hilarious first date in China. In the video, Sprouse revealed that, during their date, Palvin ate one-third of his burrito in a single bite – then proceeded to ask him for a kiss right after.

In Palvin’s defence, she revealed in the video that she felt compelled to make the first move because the Suite Life of Zack & Cody actor wouldn’t.

“It was 3am and I had to take control because you wouldn’t kiss me! We’d been talking and texting for four months and [I was like], ‘Are you going to kiss me or what?’” said Palvin.

The two corresponded over email for several months until, in an effort to impress his then future wife, Clooney invited Alamuddin to London’s Abbey Road Studios for their first date, where he was supervising the recording of the score for his 2014 film, The Monuments Men.

“That was a good first date. Then we went for dinner. She said, ‘Let’s go to this place.’ It was one of those places that was incredibly hip and chic. And when we came out, there were 50 paparazzi there. But she handled it like a champ,” George said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

The couple tied the knot in 2014 and have since welcomed twins Ella and Alexander.
