How Rihanna and A$AP Rocky became the ultimate fashion duo: the NFL Super Bowl singer and rapper rock bold couple looks from Balenciaga, Louis Vuitton and Miu Miu, to Cartier at the Golden Globes
As expected, the new mum delivered an incredible performance, much to the joy of her fans watching both live and via screens worldwide.
The Barbadian singer is known for her bold, individualist and risk-taker sartorial choices which she’s been rocking since she debuted in 2005. Even maternity wear gets a stylish upgrade thanks to Rihanna’s bold fashion choices.
However, Rihanna arguably shines brightest when she’s arm in arm with her beau and baby daddy Rakim Athelaston Mayers, or better known as A$AP Rocky. Together, they elevate each other’s already bold fashion choices to new heights.
When it comes to fashion, the duo are the power couple to beat. Let’s take a closer look at what makes their style game so unique …
Rihanna and A$AP Rocky’s shared love for oversized outerwear
As fashion icons, these two are not afraid to experiment with daring sartorial picks. But comfort is always key, and what’s cosier than slipping into oversized outfits?
Earlier last year, the lovebirds hit the NYC streets where A$AP Rocky donned an all-camo look, showcasing pieces from Dries Van Noten and Vetements. On the other hand, Rihanna was the epitome of effortless cool in a maxi Balenciaga parka and cosy sweatshirt.
The Soho regulars were spotted again a few months later in a more colourful ensemble. Rihanna was a vision in her oversized top from Martine Rose, paired with a striking red puffer jacket by Balenciaga, sans bottoms.
Meanwhile, her rapper boyfriend donned a black-on-black look, finished off with a blond fur coat. Not to mention, his white beanie and red-and-white gloves (coordinating with RiRi’s blue Miu Miu gloves) certainly gives him his own edge.
Iconic Met Gala 2021 outfits
Meanwhile, A$AP Rocky, also 34, made a splash with his custom multicolour ERL quilted blanket look. (We told you they love their outwear, right?) Together, the duo created an unforgettable moment on the red carpet, cementing their place in Met Gala history as one of the most stylish couples to attend the event.
Their love affair with headwear
It all began in 2021, when the pair appeared in A$AP Rocky’s “DMB” music video where he sported a black Carhartt WIP cap and Rihanna complemented the look with a bold printed headscarf.
Afterwards, the couple have made headwear a signature part of their fashion. Our favourite moment, though, was when they stepped out in matching AWGE baseball caps, representing A$AP Rocky’s creative agency, in early April 2022.
Rihanna, who was pregnant at the time, added her tongue-in-cheek touch by wearing a bold T-shirt with the phrase “Who dat is? That’s just my baby daddy”, which quickly became an internet sensation.
Their polarising red carpet attire
The multi-hyphenate couple always bring a touch of quirkiness to every red carpet they attend.
RiRi wore a sparkling, strapless and leather-like dress by Rick Owens, featuring a structured detail at the waist. She paired the dress with a matching set of gloves. Meanwhile, A$AP Rocky showed up in a casual look sporting an oversized khaki jacket and matching trousers with a black T-shirt underneath.
At the Fenty Beauty event last year, Rihanna wore a shredded and backless green halter top that showed off her baby bump. She matched her top with similar styled silver pants. As for A$AP Rocky, he showed up in a stylish purple Louis Vuitton letterman jacket and ripped jeans, showcasing his eclectic fashion sense.
Despite their different approaches to fashion, the mega stars always showcase their individual styles and complement each other on the red carpet.
“We get dressed in completely separate [areas] across the house, and we leave looking coordinated somehow,” Rihanna told People. Now that’s couple goals.
They are pioneers of mixing classic and modern fashion
Take the recent 2023 Golden Globes show, for example. The couple arrived fashionably late and skipped the traditional red-carpet event, but was still named the best dressed couple of the night.
Rihanna stunned the crowd in a Schiaparelli velvet strapless gown featuring an eye-catching combination of a fitted bodice and billowing sleeves in the back. She completed the look with another glove moment, Cartier jewellery and pigtail buns. Meanwhile, A$AP Rocky kept things classy and opted for a sleek Bottega Veneta tuxedo, per W Magazine.
And that wasn’t just a one-time thing – they often put a own twist on classic styles. During last year’s Valentine’s Day, the couple made headlines by donning matching red ensembles. Rihanna wore an eye-catching hooded Alaïa dress, complete with a cinching tie-up belt crafted by the maison’s current designer Pieter Mulier for her bold maternity look.
Meanwhile, her beau made a strong fashion statement in a sharp double-breasted Celine suit, with a glittering sequin-pinstripe design which he paired with a crisp white shirt. He completed the look with metallic silver and red trainers that perfectly complemented Rihanna’s show-stopping ensemble.
