Britain’s new Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has made history on a list of counts: he’s the country’s first prime minister of colour, at 42, he’s youngest leader in modern times – and he’s also by far the wealthiest one.

Sunak and his millionaire wife Akshata Murty, 42 – daughter of Infosys founder billionaire Narayana Murthy – reportedly have a combined fortune of about US$830 million, according to The Washington Post. That’s more than that of the nation’s royals including late monarch Queen Elizabeth, recently appointed King Charles III and Camilla, Queen Consort.

But is he also the prime minister with the most lavish life? Let’s take a look at the way the new leader splashes out …

Multimillion-dollar homes

It’s no surprise that the uber-wealthy couple live in a multimillion-dollar house. And not only one. He reportedly has four homes from the UK to the US, worth over US$17 million in total, according to The Guardian. He is now living with his wife and two daughters, Krishna and Anoushka, in a five-bedroom mews house in Kensington, West London, with an estimated price of nearly US$8 million. What cost of living crisis?

They also lived in another US$1.2 million flat in the same neighbourhood, which was close to the former Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, which now serves as a holiday home for visiting relatives, reports the Daily Express.

At the weekend, the family regularly retreat to a countryside mansion in the village of Kirby Sigston in Yorkshire. He bought it for US$1.7 million but it has risen in value to US$2.3 million after he spent nearly half a million to add a swimming pool, gym, yoga studio and tennis court, per The Guardian. The pool costs US$16,000 per year for the heating system alone.

When they get bored, the family can travel to California to have a sunbath on the beach in Santa Monica, on the edge of Los Angeles, where his penthouse is located. Its value is estimated at US$6.3 million.

Luxurious cars

Although Sunak confirmed to MPs that he used an old Volkswagen to travel around London, he is believed to own more luxurious vehicles. While British media claimed that he also drives a BMW, a Lexus and a Range Rover, The Times Of India and several car magazines figured out that he also owns a Jaguar XJL and two Range Rovers, including Land Rover Discovery and Land Rover Range Sentinel. Is that Volkswagen just for show?

Whatever they are, none of them are less than the Volkswagen Golf GTI, his cheapest vehicle with a price of around US$29,000, according to Car Blog India.

Gorgeous wardrobe

Sunak is probably the best-dressed prime minister as well. He has shown his posh trendy taste in style everywhere he goes. Earlier in July, he appeared in a pair of nearly US$600 Prada shoes while visiting a building site in Teesside, Northern England, British media reported.

A few days later, he wore a bespoke suit by Bloomsbury tailor Henry Herbert worth some US$4,000 when he attended a leadership vote, according to the same source.

They are just part of his wardrobe which features other items like a nearly US$1,000 Reiss jacket or a pair of US$110 Palm Angels sliders, according to numerous reported sightings. By the way, his coffee also needs a fashionable container, a smart mug at “only” about US$200, reports The Guardian.

Fancy Star Wars stuff

When Sunak was little, he didn’t dream of becoming the leader of the country but … and, as he says in a tweet, he “wanted to be a Jedi”. Now the politician is still a huge fan of Star Wars. Besides collecting lightsabres, he visits premieres of the film, according to The National. He tweeted a photo of himself and his “Jedi Master”, former chancellor of the exchequer Sajid Javid at a screening of The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. He even bought his kids a Lego baby Yoda as a Christmas gift.

His Coca-Cola collection

Another “obsession” of Sunak’s is his love for Coca-Cola. He revealed in an interview with two students that he is a “coke addict” and collects Coca-Cola things.

“I’m an enormous Coca-Cola fan. Coke. Er, yes. I won’t drink Diet Coke. No Coke Zero. Never any Pepsi,” he said, adding that his favourite drink is Mexican Coke for its special ingredient of sugar cane. However, he limits himself to just one drink a week because he has seven fillings as a result of drinking too much when he was younger.

A “Britney Spears Ride” on his Peloton bike

The new PM apparently keeps fit thanks to the “Britney Spears Ride”. It is part of Peloton artist series sessions that he takes every morning at 6am, on his US$2,000 Peloton bike to cycle to Britney Spears songs, according to The Independent. It is when he imagines that he is the pop star in a wig with “costumes”, following the instructions of his favourite coach Cody Rigsby, per the same source.
