When one thinks of famed tennis sisters Serena and Venus Williams, images of impressive rallies and grand slam championships come to mind. Yet few people remember that the Williams sisters overcame many hardships to get to where they are now.
The film King Richard, starring Will Smith, delves into the backstory of the Williams family and the difficulties that they’ve faced on the way to tennis stardom – including financial struggles, racism and violence.

One character that stands out in the film is Yetunde Price, who was portrayed by Mikayla Lashae Bartholomew. Price was the older half-sister and served as their personal assistant before her tragic death in 2003 at the age of 31.

While Venus and Serena share eight siblings, they considered Price one of their closest sisters, even taking her on board as their personal assistant. Price frequently joined her sisters at their tournaments, including the 1997 US Open and Wimbledon.

Close friends of Price said that while Venus and Serena might have overshadowed her, she still saw the pair as her little sisters. So close was her relationship with them, that she even talked to them every night before bed, according to Showbiz Cheatsheet.

Before becoming a personal assistant, Price worked as a nurse for nine years at St. Francis Medical Center in Lynwood, California. This was a decision that led her to stay in Compton even as her entire family moved to Florida when her sisters’ tennis careers started blooming, according to the Los Angeles Times.

She also opened her own hair salon in Lakewood with her best friend.

She was down-to-earth and was discreet about her famous family

Despite being related to some of the most famous athletes in the world, Price stayed down-to-earth. She refused to accept handouts from her sisters, only accepting them if she could work for it, reported the Irish Independent.

She was also discreet about her relationship with Venus and Serena. Some of her friends did not know that she was related to them until they saw Price sitting beside Serena on a television broadcast, reported Los Angeles Times.

She was tragically shot to death by a gang member

On September 14, 2003, Price was in an SUV with her boyfriend when a member of the Southside Crips gang opened fire on their car, reported People.

She was reportedly not the intended target: the perpetrator, Robert Edward Maxfield, mistook their vehicle for that of a rival gang member’s. He eventually pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter in 2006, relating to Price’s death, and was sentenced to 15 years behind bars. He was released in 2018, but was rearrested the same year for allegedly violating his parole, reported People.

Serena Williams also spoke up about the emotions she felt upon seeing her sister Price brought back to life through the film King Richard: “I think I cried the whole time. Whenever she came on film, I just … personally, I just started, like [crying] … I mean, even still,” Serena said in a Red Table Talk interview.
