She was scouted while working at a cafe

In the episode of the hit variety show Running Man where Song had to work undercover in a coffee shop as part of a mission, one of the hosts mentioned that many Korean celebrities get cast while working part-time jobs at cafes in Gangnam.

Song then raised her hand and revealed that she, too, was discovered while working temporarily at a cafe across from a mall.

Song grew up in a strict household

She’s known now for her outgoing and daring personality on Running Man, but Song revealed on EDaily Korea how she grew up in a sheltered environment and that her parents were overprotective.

“I had a lot of restrictions when I was a teen, so in my twenties, I was really busy trying out a lot of things,” she said. “After my twenties and into my thirties, I gained a lot of experience, and now I have confidence no matter what I do.”

Marriage isn’t on her mind – for now

As Song is approaching her forties, she is often asked about her views on marriage.

“It’s hard enough just taking care of myself,” she pointed out on Soompi. “I’m really enjoying my life now, so unless I meet someone for whom I’d be willing to change my lifestyle and daily routine, I don’t plan on getting married.”

Her nicknames include ‘Mong Ji-hyo’ and ‘Ace Ji-hyo’

Song has a lot of nicknames. When she was younger, she was called “Chupa Chups” after the lollipop brand because her head looks big and she has narrow shoulders. Song explained that because of her profile, she appears to be short when in fact she is 168cm (five-foot-five) in height.

When she became an actress, she chose the stage name Song Ji-hyo derived from the names of actors Song Hye-kyo and Song Seung-heon, who she both admired in the drama Autumn in my Heart.

On Running Man, Song is called “Mong Ji-hyo” or “Blank Ji-hyo” because of her signature blank expression. She has the habit of spacing out! But don’t be fooled by her blank face – Song is also the star of the team. She’s called “Ace Ji-hyo” for her ability to accomplish difficult missions. Song is a smart player who bests other Running Man hosts and has great luck at games.
