Say nautical style and blue and white stripes immediately swim to mind, especially those Breton shirts favoured by Picasso. Think nautical and you get images of seaside escapes from Biarritz to Nantucket. Sailor stripes are now no longer limited to blue and white. Throw in blacks, reds and yellows. You can also incorporate traditional sailing colours in different motifs, as done at Gucci where azure blue was used to create a flower print. Fabrication should be light and breezy, like cotton, linen and seersucker. You can also go literal and incorporate seafaring elements, such as anchors, sailboats, and sea creatures. Tommy Hilfiger paired a sweater with an anchor print and chinos, with a red windbreaker (HK$1,690) for that unaffected preppy I-have-a-sailboat look.
