Set like Neville's previous books in Northern Ireland, the story begins in 1963 with Ireland awaiting a state visit by the first Catholic president of America - John F. Kennedy. The tension surrounding his arrival obscures a series of murders with roots in a different historical moment. Three Nazis, all granted political asylum, have been murdered. The question on our hero Albert Ryan's lips is: who is doing the killing? is Neville's bid for a mature grand style. More stately than his early machine-gun like thrillers, this historical tale balances gravitas, plot, thrills and character. Ryan is rounded, if a little earnest. A man with a dilemma: can one see Nazis as victims? The heavyweight atmosphere is enhanced by Stephen Armstrong's portentous reading.
