Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan's Winter Sleep won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in May.
MUSIC

Taylor Swift  reinvented herself as a full-blown pop star with her latest, chart-topping album,  1989.

Edinburgh hip-hop trio Young Fathers were awarded the 2014 Mercury music prize for their eclectic debut, Dead.

Random Access Memories by Daft Punk won the Grammy for album of the year.
 
Soul singer Bobby Womack died in June.

Tommy Ramone, the drummer for The Ramones, died of cancer in July.
BOOKS

The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in April.

Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage by Haruki Murakami was released in English in August.

Richard Flanagan won the Man Booker prize in October for his book  The Narrow Road to the Deep North.

In October French writer Patrick Modiano won the 2014 Nobel Prize in literature "for the art of memory with which he has evoked the most ungraspable human destinies and uncovered the life-world of the occupation".

April 17 marked the death at the age of 87 of Gabriel García Márquez, Colombian Nobel laureate and author of  One Hundred Years of Solitude - considered one of the most influential novels of the 20th century. 
 
ARTS

American playwright David Henry Hwang's  Kung Fu, which is based on the life of Bruce Lee, opened on Broadway in February.

International conductor Lorin Maazel died in July at the age of 84.

Jeff Koons - who had a retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art and is being shown at the Pompidou Centre - is alleged to have infringed the copyright of a work by Franck Davidovici titled  Fait d'hiver.

The Fondation Louis Vuitton arts complex, designed by architect Frank Gehry, opened in Paris in October.

In October the Picasso Museum reopened in Paris, after having closed in 2009 for expansion.
