The Commission on Poverty holds a meeting to discuss a report by University of Hong Kong academic Nelson Chow Wing-sun on retirement protection. Chow examined the costs, sustainability and funding options for six protection schemes. The government may unveil the report as early as tomorrow. There have been calls for the government to set up a formal pension system given weak returns from the existing mandatory provident fund scheme.
The Hong Kong Academy of Medicine inaugurates a Disaster Preparedness and Response Institute. It will focus on the various threats facing the city, including typhoons, fires, infectious disease outbreaks and protests. The institute was set up with HK$271 million in funding from the Jockey Club. Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying will attend the launching ceremony. A seminar on disaster preparedness will also be held.
