November 2015 - Japan Pile Corp. becomes a knock-on casualty of closer examination of the construction industry, admitting to manipulating data on the safety of pilings used in multi-storey buildings across Japan.

October 2015 - Asahi Kasei Construction Materials Corp. found to have falsified information at 266 construction projects in the last decade, including apartment complexes, schools and hospitals.

April 2015 - Toshiba Corp. found to have padded profits to the tune of Y224.8 billion (HK$14.12 billion) through systematic accounting irregularities over a period of seven years. An investigation has indicate that aggressive profit targets set by management could not be attained, so subordinates inflated division-level results. The company reports a group operating loss of Y90.49 billion (HK$5.68 million) for the first half of the fiscal year.

April 2015 - Toyo Tire & Rubber, one of the leading Japanese manufacturers of seismic shock absorbers designed to enable large structures to withstand earthquakes, admits that 145 buildings have been fitted with sub-standard equipment.

December 2014 - The president of Takata Corp. resigns over a scandal involving faulty air bags for vehicles that are blamed for at least seven deaths in the US. More than 34 million cars in the US are fitted with the air bags, which were found to explode and send shrapnel into passengers’ bodies in the event of an accident.

November 2013 - Hankyu Hanshin Hotel Co. admits that its restaurants deliberately mis-labelled 47 ingredients on its menus over a period of seven years. Among other things, cheap steak from Chile was advertised on menus as being sought-after “wagyu” beef.
