Lee Kai-fu, the technology executive and outspoken blogger with a massive following on social media on the mainland, has returned to work after 17 months of treatment for cancer.
Lee, who was the founding president of Google China, has a form of lymphatic cancer.
He had been receiving treatment in his hometown of Taipei, but has now returned to work in Beijing, a spokesman for his company said.
Lee was known for his outspoken views and has had 51 million followers on his social media account.
He is known for encouraging young people in the mainland and Taiwan to make the most of their educational background and called on their parents to give them the greater freedom.
Wang Zhaohui, a spokesman for Lee's company, Innovation Works, told the South China Morning Post that Lee had been allowed to return to work for limited hours after his two most recent medical checks showed some improvement in his cancer.
Lee addressed his staff and invited dozens of entrepreneurs and media friends to his home for a party after his return to work, The Beijing News reported.
"I am back because I want to get my job done. I don't want to retire," Lee was quoted as saying.
"Some people may decide to go into seclusion and retire, but I will still work with my partners at Innovation Works, under doctor's advice," he said.
Lee, 53, joined Google in 2005 and has also held posts at Apple and Microsoft. He set up Innovation Works in Beijing in 2009.
The venture capital company specialises in funding Chinese computer and information technology entrepreneurs.
Lee announced in 2013 that he was sick, but an article in a Communist Party-controlled magazine Dangjian questioned whether he was really ill and also suggested he had suspiciously close relationships with various institutions in the United States .
His followers on social media said it was an attempt to smear the prominent blogger and was also part of efforts to gag outspoken commentators on social media on the mainland.
The Dangjian article that sparked the controversy in 2013 was written by the current affairs commentator, Zhou Xiaoping.
