The number of bank branches closed due to pro-democracy protests around the city has fallen to five from eight on Saturday, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority reported on Monday morning.

At the start of business, five branches of four banks in Mong Kok – HSBC Holdings, Hang Seng Bank, Citibank and Australia and New Zealand Banking Group – were temporarily closed, the HKMA said in a statement. Temporary suspension of service at automated teller machines was also expected, it added.

Argyle Street and Nathan Road have seen intermittent violent clashes between protesters and police, with the Occupy Central movement now entering its 23rd day.

At its peak on September 29, the number of closures totalled 36 branches, offices or ATMs of 20 banks.
