In addition to modelling, though – she embarked on her career at just 16 – she was once a ranked junior tennis player. “It was devastating when I gave it up,” she said in an interview with Editorialist magazine, adding that she hasn’t picked up a racquet in years. “I don’t know how to play for fun, because I played to compete, to win. I hope one day I can get back into it. I think that would be sort of healing for me.”

Their meeting was serendipitous indeed: they bumped into each other at a restaurant in NYC in 2012. Hannah was out with her mum while Derek was hanging out with some friends – one of whom happened to know Hannah too, and introduced the pair. The model later wrote in a post for The Players’ Tribune, a blog founded by Derek, that she had no idea that he had a prestigious career with the Yankees: “I thought he was a pitcher. I know it sounds strange that I didn’t know he was a shortstop.”
